Book review: After Tomorrow by Gillian Cross

We have been reading this book for the past few weeks in years 7 and 8 Book Club and what a fabulous read it is written by the wonderful bestselling author Gillian Cross.

Blurb: What if you woke up tomorrow and everything had changed? Money is worthless. Your friends are gone. Armed robbers roam the streets. No one is safe. For Matt and his little brother, Taco, that nightmare is a reality. Their only hope of survival is to escape through the Channel Tunnel. But danger awaits on the other side…. stay or go? What would you do?

This book is all about survival and looking after yourself as well as others. Matt ends up looking after Justin and Taco along with his friend Paige who has also managed to sneak into France. Together they will do anything to get some money together to buy small amounts of food to survive, but can they survive?

This book creates great discussion points and one thing the students commented on is about how immigrants had to survive near the Channel Tunnel when trying to get through the Tunnel into England. This is a book that is so current it’s an educational read as much as anything else.

AR Level: 4.1

I rate this book: 8/10
