The Island at the Edge of Night by Lucy Strange

Review:

Faye Fitzgerald is sent to boarding school on a bleak and treeless island. In fact, she is one of the first pupils of Auk Island School, a desolate and battered place, wild and remote, seemingly at the world’s end. Abandoned with only six other pupils at the school – Faye discovers that she and the other pupils have been sent there for doing something wicked. But what has she done?

She remembers so little of the night everything changed – the night that robbed her of being able to speak. She might be bold enough to tackle the sinister mysteries of the island, but has she the courage to face the secrets deep within herself?

The Island at the Edge of Night is a brilliant middle-grade thriller with a gothic atmosphere and wonderful mystery at it’s heart. The descriptions and imagery used make this book a cracking adventure full of beauty and landscapes whilst covering themes of family, friendships, love, healing, the power of nature but more importantly having courage and facing your fears. The magical realism enable this book to be full of twists and turns and I was gripped from the start right through to the very end. This is a brilliant read!

The Island at the Edge of Night is a perfect book for upper primary school libraries and classrooms and for fans of adventure mystery stories.
