The Voyage of Sam Singh by Gita Ralleigh

Review:

Land-pirate Sam Singh goes in search for his missing brother. Sam’s brother Moon, a skilled thief, has gone missing and Sam fears he’s been captured in the notorious prison on the Isle of Lost voices. On a quest to save Moon, Sam leaves his tribe to travel to the Isle and on the way meets a shady figure called the Collector who offers him a job.

Alongside Sam on his journey is talking parrot Suka and young guide Lola, who trek with him into the perilous jungle where they discover deadly secrets and special missions. With an unexpected storm sweeping them back out to sea and thwarting their plans of breaking into the prison, the clock is ticking and the pressure is on to save Moon and find a a better future for Lola and Sam.

The Voyage of Sam Singh is a wonderful middle-grade adventure story full of action, historical fantasy and magic – what is there not to love! Covering themes of repatriation and indigenous cultures, this story is also full of bravery, courage, loyalty and hope. The setting and characterisation is just sublime and the storyline is gripping from the start right through to the end. I have to say Gita is a new author to me and wow I want to read more of her work. This story is a classic in the making and has everything a middle-grade reader would want. I loved it!

The Voyage of Sam Singh is a perfect book for upper primary school libraries and classrooms and for fans of books by Sophie Anderson and other adventure stories.
